abstract AROMATIC ISOCYANATES ARE PRODUCED DIRECTLY FROM AROMATIC NITRO COMPOUNDS IS A CONTINUOUS PROCESS IN WHICH CARBON MONOXIDE AND AN AROMATIC NITRO COMPOUND ARE REACTED IN A REACTION ZONE IN THE PRESENCE OF A CATALYST AND A SOLVENT TO FORM AN AROMATIC ISOCYANATE. A GASEOUS PRODUCT OF THE REACTION ZONE IS COLLECTED AND COOLED TO YIELD A FRACTION OF UNREACTED CARBON MONOXIDE IN GASEOUS FORM, WHICH IS CONDENSED, PURIFIED AND RECYCLED TO THE REACTION ZONE, AND ANOTHER FRACTION OF LIQUIFIED SOLVENT, WHICH IS ALSO RECYCLED TO THE REACTION ZONE. THE SLURRY PRODUCT OF THE REACTION ZONE IS COLLECTED, COOLED AND SEPARATED INTO A SOLID COMPONENT AND A LIQUID COMPONENT THE SOLID COMPONENT, WHICH IS PREDOMINANTLY CATALYST, IS RECYCLED TO THE REACTION ZONE WITH OR WITHOUT REGENERATION. THE LIQUID COMPONENT IS DISTILLED TO SEPARATE AROMATIC ISOCYANATE PRODUCT FROM THE DISTILLATION RESIDUE WHICH PREDOMINATES IN UNREACTED AROMATIC NITRO COMPOUND AND SOLVENT, THE LATTER RESIDUE BEING RECYCLED TO THE REACTION ZONE. THE AROMATIC ISOCYANATE PRODUCT IS USEFUL AS A REACTANT IN THE PREPARATION OF POLYURETHANES.
