A RUBBER MODIFIIED POLYMER BLEND IS PREPARED FROM A RELATIVELY SMALL PARTICLE ELASTOMER WHICH IS AGGLOMERATED TO A PARTICLE SIZE OF ABOUT 0.2 TO 1.0 MICRON BY ADMIXTURE WITH A MORE HYDROPHILIC POLYMER AT A PH OF ABOUT 3.0 TO 10.5. FOLLOWING AGGLOMERATION, THE LATEX IS ADMIXED WITH A VINYLIDENE MONOMER FORMULATION AND GRAFTING CONDITIONS ARE ESTABLISHED TO PRODUCE POLYMERIZATION OF THE VINYLIDNE FORMULATION AND GRAFTING OF AT LEAST A PORTION OF THE POLYMER BEING FORMED ONTO THE AGGLOMERATED ELASTOMER. THE ELASTOMER SHOULD HAVE A GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATRE BELOW 100* CENTIGRADE AND THE AGGLOMERATION TAKES PLACE AT A TEMPERATURE OF 0* TO 100* CENTIGRADE AND ABOVE THE GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATRE OF THE ELASTOMER. |
