abstract CEPHALOSPORIN C, WHICH IS USEFUL AS A STARTING MATERIAL IN THE PREPARATION OF THE SEMI-SYNTHETIC CEPHALOSPORIN ANTIBIOTICS, IS PRODUCED BY THE AEROBIC CULTIVATION OF A NOVEL MICROORGANISM, CEPHALOSPORIUM SP. STRAIN F. 12 (ATCC 20339). THE CULTIVATION IS PERFORMED IN A NUTRIENT MEDIUM CONTAINING ASSIMILABLE SOURCES OF CARBON AND NITROGEN, ONE OR MORE INORGANIC SALTS, AND AN ORGANIC SOURCE OF SULFUR. HIGH YIELDS OF CEPHALOSPORIN C ARE OBTAINED, WITH REDUCED YIELDS OF THE UNDESIRABLE BY-PRODUCT CEPHALOSPORIN N, BY COMPARISON WITH PREVIOUSLY USED CEPHALOSPORIUM STRAINS.
