abstract AN INHIBITOR FOR AMYLASES HAS BEEN RECOVERED FROM THE CULTURE BRITH OF STREPTOMYCES FLAVOCHROMOGENCES NO. 280. IT IS A PEPTIDE WHICH YIELDS GLUTAMIC ACID, SPARTIC ACID, SERINE, ANDALANINE UPON HYDROCHLORIC, IS STABLE UP TO 100* C. FOR 15 MINUTES IN A HYDROCHLORIC ACID, BUT IS RAPIDLY INACTIVATED IN BOILING 1 N SODIUM HYDROXIDE SOLUTION. IT IS PARTIALLY SOLUBLE IN METHANOL, ETHANOL AND ACETONE AND PRATICIALLY INSOLUBLE IN MAY OTHER ORGANIC SOLVENTS. THE INHIBITOR RETARDS OR PREVENT THE DECOMPOSITION OF STARCH TO GLUCOSE BY AMYLASES OF SEVERAL KNOWN TYPES.
