abstract HETEROCYCLIC QUATERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOUNDS OF THE FORMULAS: 2-((2-HO,R2,R1-PHENYL)-CH=N-),1-R,R3-PYRIDINIUM HO(-) OR 2-((2-HO,R1,R2-PHENYL)-CH=N-),1-R,R3,R4-QUINOLINIUM HO(-) WHEREIN R IS ALKYL (C1-C18), CYCLOALKYL OR ARALKYL; R1 IS AN ELECTRONEGATIVE SUBSTITUENTS; R2 IS HYDROGEN OR R1; AND R3 AND R4 ARE LOWER ALKYL OR HALOGEN. THESE COMPOUNDS ARE PREPARED BY REACTING THE CORRESPONDING SALICYLALDEHYDES WITH 1,2-DIHYDRO-2-IMINO-1ALKYLPYRIDINES OR -QUINOLINES. THE PRODUCTS IN SUITABLE MEDIA EXHIBIT THERMOCHROMISM, WHICH IS ALSO DEPENDENT ON THE AMOUNT OF MOISTURE IN THE SYSTEM, AND ARE THEREFORE USEFUL AS TEMPERATURES INDICATORS AND WATER DETECTORS.
