titleOfInvention | Flocculation by methylamine-epichlorohydrin polymer |
abstract | A cationic, water-soluble, storage-stable, methyl-amineepichlorohydrin polymer is prepared by reacting a quantity of a methylamine-epichlorohydrin polymer which is well below its gel point with successively added small amounts of epichlorohydrin until the polymer nears the stage at which it is an irreversile gel, and then reacting the polymer with sufficient methylamine to inactivate substantially all amine-reactive epichlorohydrin residues present. At least the last step of the reaction is performed at a temperature at which a partial depolymerization of the polymer occurs. Water-soluble polymers of higher molecular weight and larger dimensions are produced by graft polymerizing one or more watersoluble vinyl monomers upon a hydrophilic water-dispersible cationic poly(hydroxyalkylene) polyamine, which is not necessarily the foregoing polyamine. The polymers are flocculants for suspended solids in sewage and mine effluent water and dry strength agents for paper. |
