abstract A process for the production of zinc and sulphuric acid comprising leaching solid zinc sulphate with an aqueous liquor to form a leach liquor, electrolysing the latter to obtain zinc and a spent electrolyte comprising sulphuric acid, concentrating the sulphuric acid content in the spent electrolyte to precipitate the bulk of the residual zinc sulphate as a solid, separating the latter and so obtaining a sulphuric acid filtrate, and recycling said precipitated zinc sulphate to the electrolysis step in the next cycle by dissolving it in the aqueous leach liquor fed to the electrolysis step. Preferably the starting material (zinc sulphate) is obtained by a controlled oxidation (sulphating) roast of zinc sulphide ore or zinc containing residues obtained in zinc manufacturing processes.
