THESE SALTS CAN BE CONVERTED INTO A CYCLIC SULFONIUM HYDROXIDE INNER SALT OR ZWITTERIONIC MONOMER (II). THESE REACTIVE CYCLIC SULFONIUM ZWITTERION MONOMERS THERMALLY POLYMERIZE TO YIELD WATER-INSOLUBLE, THERMOSET RESINS USEFUL AS ADHESIVES, COATINGS, FILMS, AND IMPREGNANTS. APPLIED TO NONPOROUS SURFACES, SUCH AS GLASS AND WIRE, HARD SURFACE COATINGS WITH HIGH IMPACT RESISTANCE COUPLED WITH GOOD WATER AND CHEMICAL RESISTANCE ARE OBTAINED.
