abstract Organic isocyanates can be recovered with beneficial ease and efficiency from crude isocyanate compositions containing tar (residue component) and other contaminants (e.g., compositions as obtained by phosgenation of an amine in a solvent) by a process which includes adding a suitable amount of a useful tar-thinning agent and distilling the resulting mixture either batchwise or continuously in the presence of a stripping agent so that the distillate contains most of the organic isocyanate and the still heel contains the tar and tar-thinning agent.
