abstract A METHOD IS DESCRIBED FOR THE PREPARATION OF MONOCYCLIC ARYL COMPOUNDS OF TRIVALENT GROUP V-A ELEMENTS WHEREIN THE ARYL SUBSTITUENT IS SUBSTITUTED IN ITS ORTHO POSITION WITH A HALOGEN, ALKYL, ARYLOXY OR ALJYLOXY SUBSTITUENT. THE RESULTANT COMPOUND IS USEFUL AS A LIGAND IN THE PREPARATION OF METAL COMPLEXES, SUCH AS COMPLEXES OF PALLADIUM AND PLATINUM, WHICH ARE CATALYSTS FOR HYDROCARBON CONVERSIONS SUCH AS OXIDATIONS OR HYROFORMYLATIONS. THE METHOD FOR THE ORTHO SUBSTITUTION OF THE AROMATIC COMPOUNDS COMPRISES THE REACTION OF A PALLADIUM OR PLATINUM CHELATE OF THE AROMATIC COMPOUND WITH SUBSTITUTING AGENYS SUCH AS HALOGEN OR HALIDE FOR THE HALOGENSUBSTITUTED, AN ALKYL HALID FOR THE ALKYL-SUBSTITUTED, OR AN ALKYL OR ARYK ORTHOFORMATE ESTER FOR THE ALKOLY OR ARYLOCYSUBSTITUTED COMPOUND.
