AN EVEN, TENACIOUS BLACK COATING OF NICKEL SULFIDE IS APPLIED TO THE SURFACE OF ALUMINUM ALLOYS BY IMMERSION OF THE ALLOY INTO AN AQUEOUS BATH CONTAINING FROM 35200 G./L. OF NICL2.6 AQ AND FROM 0.03-0.25 MOLAR OF THIOCYANATE IONS FOR A PERIOD UP TO 5 MINUTES ACCORDING TO THE PROCESS DISCLOSED. PREFERABLY THE AQUEOUS BATH ALSO CONTAINS FROM 10-20 G./L.
