POLYBENZIMIDAZOLES ARE DESCRIBED WHICH ARE CHARACTERIZED BY THE RECURRING UNIT: -R-((R1)X-2,1-BENZIMIDAZOLYLENE)-R2-((R1)X-1,2-BENZIMIDA ZOLYLENE)- WHEREIN R=ARYLENE (C6-12), ALKYLENE (C1-12), CYCLOALKYLENE (C5-8), FURANYLENE, PYRIDYLENE, PHENYLENE-CH2-PHENYLENE, PHENYLENE-CO-PHENYLENE, PHENYLENE-SO2-PHENYLENE, PHENYLENE-O-PHENYLENE, PHENYLENE-OOC-PHENYLENE, PHENYLENE-O-CO-O-PHENYLENE R1=LOWER-ALKYL, LOWER-ALKOXY, HALOGEN; X=O-3 AND R2=ARYLENE (C6-12), PHENYLENE-CH2-PHENYLENE, PHENYLENE-CO-PHENYLENE, PHENYLENE-SO2-PHENYLENE, PHENYLENE-O-PHENYLENE, BICYCLOHEXYLENE, PHENYLENE-OOC-PHENYLENE, PHENYLENE-O-CO-O-PHENYLENE, CYCLOHEXYLENE-CH2-CYCLOHEXYL- ENE THE POLYBENZIMIDAZOLES POSSESS MARKEDLY HIGH THERMAL STABILITY AS COMPARED WITH PREVIOUSLY KNOWN COMPOUNDS OF THIS CLASS WHICH HAVE H ATOMS ATTACHED TO RING NITROGEN. tHEY ALOS POSSESS LOWER GALSS TRANSITION AND MELT TEMPERATURES THAN PREVIOUSLY KNOWN POLYBENZIMIDAZOLES AND, ACCORDINGLY, POSSESS THE ADVANTAGE THAT THEY CAN BE FABRICATED USING CONVENTIONAL MOLDING TECHNIQUES. |
