abstract This invention relates to the use of a support of aluminium phosphate in the cristobalite form in a process for the vapor phase oxidation of benzene to maleic anhydride in which a gaseous mixture containing benzene and oxygen with an inert diluent gas is contacted at a temperature in the range of 350* to 450* C with the supported catalyst, whose catalyst component, present to the extent of between 5 and 30 percent by weight in the supported catalyst, comprises two or more of vanadium oxide, molybdenum oxide, tungsten oxide and phosphorus oxide.
