abstract | A process of preparing certain alpha substituted carboxylic acid anhydrides by reaction of a compound having ethylenic unsaturation (preferably at a terminal position) and an anhydride of a C2-C18 carboxylic acid having an available alpha hydrogen such reaction being carried out in the presence of hydrogen peroxide as the free radical iniator. The products produced by the process are easily esterified to produce esters suitable as perfume additives or flavor additives. |
