abstract A method and composition useful for altering deglutition in ruminants by closure of the esophageal groove therein are disclosed. In the method and composition, guanidine, 1aminoguanidine, 1,3-diaminoguanidine or a pharmaceuticallyacceptable salt thereof are employed to close the esophageal groove of a ruminant animal, thereby permitting orally-ingested nutrients and medicaments to bypass the reticulo-rumen.
