OTHER ELECTRODES IN LIEU OF SILVER OXIDE ARE ALSO DISCLOSED AS USEFUL, E.G. SILVER CHLORIDE, COPPER CHLORIDE OR OXYGEN OR AIR ELECTRODES. IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INVENTION, THE ELECTROLYTE COMPRISES AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION OF SODIUM OR LITHIUM METABORATE AND SODIUM OR LITHIUM PERCHLORATE AND HAS A PH IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF 11. IN CERTAIN CONDITIONS, ADDITIVES TO THE ELECTROLYTE SOLUTION, E.G. SODIUM TARTRATE IMPROVE OPERATION OF THE CELL IN RAPID DISCHARGE. THE INVENTION IS APPLICABLE NOTABLY TO RAPIDLY DISCHARGING ELECTROCHEMICAL GENERATORS.
