abstract AN IMPROVEMENT IN THE SUSPENSION POLYMERIZATION OF A POLYMERIZATE CONTAINING AT LEAST 50% POLYVINYL CHLORIDE BY THE STEPS OF MIXING (1) MONOMERS SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF VINYL CHLORIDE AND MIXTURES OF VINYL CHLORIDE WITH UP TO 50% OF OLEFINICALLY UNSATURATED COMPOUNDS COPOLYMERIZABLE WITH VINYL CHLORIDE, (2) A POLYMERIZATION CATALYST, (3) SUSPENSION STABILIZERS INCLUDING PROTECTIVE COLLOIDS, AND (4) WATER, HEATING SAID MIXTURE UNDER CONTINUOUS AGITATION TO POLYMERIZATION TEMPERATURES AND RECOVERING SAID POLYMERIZATE. THE IMPROVEMENT COMPRISES MIXING THE MONOMERS WITH WATER PRIOR TO THE ADDITTION OF THE SUSPENSION STABILIZERS INCLUDING PROTECTIVE COLLOIDS. THE SO-PREPARED POLYMERIZATES REQUIRE LESS SUSPENSION STABILIZERS INCLUDING PROTECTIVE COLLOIDS TO ATTAIN THE SAME SIZE DISTRIBUTION AS IN THE CASE WHERE THE MONOMER IS MIXED WITH WATER IN THE PRESENCE OF THE SUSPENSION STABILIZEERS INCLUDING PROTECTIVE COLLOIDS.
