abstract POLYETHYLENE IS GRAFTED ONTO HOMPOLYMERS AND COPOLYMERS OF N-VINYL AMIDES BY POLYMERIZING ETHYLENE IN THE PRESENCE OF SUCH HOMPOLYMERS AND COPOLYMERS IN THE PRESENCE OF FREE RADICAL CATALYST T A TEMPERATURE OF FROM 0* TO 300*C., PREFERABLY AT 30*C. TO 200*C., AND A PRESURE OF ABOUT 3,000 TO 50,000 P.S.IG. DURING THIS POLYMERIZATION THE ETHYLENE BECOMES AFFIXED TO THE BACKBONE OF SAID HOMO- AND COPOLYMERS AS ONE OR MORE PENDANT LONG POLY (ETHYLENE) CHAINS. THE RESULTING PRODUCTS CONSIST ESSENTIALLY OF AT LEAST TWO POLYETHYLENE CHAINS, EACH HAVING AN AVERAGE MOLECULAR WEIGHT OF AT LEAST 5,000 GRAFTED ONTO A POLYMER BACKBONE SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF HOMOPOLYMERS AND COPOLYMERS OF N-VINYL AMIDES HAVING RELATIVELY HIGH TENSILE STRENGTH WHICH CAN BE CAST INTO FLEXIBLE FILMS, AND WHICH CAN BE BLENDED WITH POLYPROPYLENE FOR THE PREPARATION OF STRONG DYEABLE FILMS AND FIBERS.
