abstract 3-Methanesulphonyl-phenthiazines (Beilstein nomenclature) unsubstituted or substituted on the nitrogen atom of the phenthiazine nucleus are prepared by oxidizing the methylthio group of a corresponding 3-methylthiophenthiazine to a methanesulphonyl group, such procedure simultaneously causing oxidation of the sulfur atom in the phenthiazine nucleus, and reducing by the action of hydrogen the resultant 3methanesulphonyl-9-oxophenthiazine to a 3-methanesulphonylphenthiazine.
