Carbocyclic oxyaromatic and heterocyclic contaminants such as phenols, pyridinols, benzofuran, and derivatives thereof in water are destroyed by dissolving excess alkali in the contaminated water and contacting the alkaline solution with sufficient chlorine to reduce the pH below seven. |
