THE APPARATUS INCLUDES A CYLINDRICAL MEMBER HAVING A HEIGHT LESS THAN THE HEIGHT OF THE CONTAINER TO BE COVERED AND AN INTERNAL DIAMETER GREATER THAN THE CONTAINER DIAMETER, SUCH THAT WHEN THE CONTAINER TO BE COVERED IS LOCATED IN THE APPARATUS, A GAP EXISTS BETWEEN THE CYLINDRICAL MEMBER AND THE CONTAINER, MEANS ARE ALSO PROVIDED FOR CREATING A VACUUM IN THIS GAP WHEREBY A FORMABLE PLASTIC SHEET MATERIAL OVERLYING THE CONTAINER RIM AND UPPER SURFACE OF THE CYLINDRICAL MEMBER IS DRAWN INTO THE GAP AND BROUGHT INTO ENGAGEMENT WITH THE CONTAINER SIDE SURFACE.
