THE PYROLYSIS OF ALKYLALUMINUM COMPOUNDS IN A NONOXIDIZING, NON-HYDROLYZING ENVIRONMENT PRODUCES A HYDROCARBON INSOLUBLE, OXIDIZABLE SOLID WHICH IS CHARACTERIZED BY THE EVOLUTION OF A HYDROCARBON GAS UPON HYDROLYSIS. PREFERABLY, AN ALKYLALUMINUM COMPOUND IS HEATED AT A TEMPERATURE IN EXCESS OF 400*F FOR A TIME IN EXCESS OF 6 HOURS. THIS PYROLATE CAN THEN BE COMBINED WITH A REDUCIBLE TRANSITION METAL COMPOUND TO PROVIDE A CATALYST FOR THE POLYMERIZATION OF ALPHA OLEFINS. |
