abstract A PROCESS OF PREPARING STABLE DISPERSIONS OF PARTICULATE SOLIDS IN EITHER LIPOPHILLIC OR HYDROPHILIC LIQUIDS BY DISPERSING THE SOLIDS IN THE LIQUID IN THE PRESENCE OF A POLYMERIC AMPHIPATHIC STABILISER WHICH ASSOCIATES WITH THE SURFACE OF THE PARTICLES AND PROVIDES A SOLVATED STERIC BARRIER AROUND THEM. THE STABILISERS COMPRISE AT LEAST ONE CHAINLIKE COMPONENT SOLVATABLE BY A LIPOPHILIC LIQUID AND WITH A CHAIN-LENGTH EQUIVALENT TO AT LEAST 12 COVALENT LINKS TOGETHER WITH AT LEAST ONE COMPONENT SOLVATABLE BY A HYDROPHILIC LIQUID, EACH COMPONENT BEING PRESENT IN THE WEIGHT PROPORTION OF AT LEAST 25% OF THE TOTAL WEIGHT OF STABILISER. THE STABILISERS MAY COMPRISE UP TO 10% BY WEIGHT OF IONIZABLE GROUPS, PREFERABLY CO-REACTED WITH COUNTER-IONS SOLVATABLY BY A HYDROPHILIC LIQUID.
