abstract A METHOD OF GELLING DILUTE OR CONCENTRATED INORGANIC ACIDS, HAVING AN OXIDIZING POTENTIAL OF LESS THAN THAT OF CONCENTRATED NITRIC ACID, AND AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF ACIDS, BASES, OR SALTS COMPRISING ADDING THERETO A MINOR AMOUNT OF A POLYMERIZED ORGANIC N-VINYL-SUBSTITUTED HETEROCYCLIC NITROGEN COMPOUND. THE POLYMRS USED ARE CROSS-LINKED, WATER-INSOLUBLE AND WATER-SWELLABLE, AND THEY ARE DRIED AND PULVERIZED BEFORE BEING ADMIXED WITH THE IONIC LIQUID TO BE GELLED. THE GELLED COMPOSITIONS ARE USEFUL IN PREPARING IMPROVED SALT-CONTAINING FERTILIZERS AND IN CLEANING SURFACES.
