abstract AN ACOUSTIC POSITION FINDING SYSTEM COMPRISING AT LEAST ONE UNDERWATER BEACON, AN ARRAY OF SPACED HYDROPHONES, AND SIGNAL PROCESSING EQUIPMENT. THE BEACON PERIODICALLY TRANSMITS A SIGNAL HAVING PULSE AND WAVE COMPONENTS IN WHICH THE PERIOD OF THE WAVE COMPONENT IS SUBSTANTIALLY SHORTER THAN THE INTERVAL BETWEEN PULSES. THE PROCESSING EQUIPMENT COMPUTES THE POSITION OF THE ARRAY RELATIVE TO THE BEACON FROM TIME AND PHASE DIFFERENCES IN SIGNALS RECEIVED BY INDIVIDUAL HYDROPHONES IN THE ARRAY.
