abstract THIS DISCLOSURE DESCRIBES METHODS FOR THE PREPARATION AND ISOLATION OF A VARIETY OF 7-METHYL-2,6-OCTADIENENITRILES BY CONDENSATION OR CYANOACETIC ACID WITH 2-METHYLHEPT-2-ENE-6-ONE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN AMINE OR AN ACID ADDITION SALT OF AN AMINE AT A TEMPERATURE OF FROM ABOUT 40*C. TO 180*C. A MIXTURE OF NITRILES IS PRODUCED IN THE CONDENSATION REACTION. THE RELATIVE PROPORTION OF EACH NITRILE IN THE MIXTURE CAN BE CONTROLLED BY CONTROL OF THE ALKALINITY OF THE REACTION MEDIUM. THE COMPOUNDS AND MIXTURES ARE USEFUL AS OLFACTORY AGENTS.
