In welding a closure member to a pipe, both contacting surfaces being of sintered material, the pipe and member are heated against an externally heated rotatable ring and the member is pressed against the pipe wall by a mandrel during rotation of the ring pipe and closure member. A pipe 1 containing a plug 2, both being of sintered aluminium containing Al 2 O 3 , is mounted in a rotating steel ring 4 on a rotating platform 6, the ring being heated to 400‹ C. by an induction coil 5 and a mandrel 3 mounted in a bearing 7 and initially coaxial with the pipe 1 is moved on a guide 8 until it engages the bottom of the plug. The mandrel is then moved radially to press the plug wall against the pipe wall and is moved rearwardly. The plug and pipe may be of sintered oxidized aluminium, sintered aluminium or sintered aluminium alloy, may be formed from a bar of sintered material or from a plate of sintered aluminium or may be formed by press moulding sintered material. The pipe may form a sheath for a nuclear reactor fuel element. A sintered aluminium plug may be coated internally with aluminium or aluminium alloy.
