abstract The present invention provides a horizontal alignment mode liquid crystal display device capable of suppressing a decrease in VHR and an increase in residual DC when the liquid crystal display device includes an alignment film containing an azobenzene group-containing polymer. The liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate including a pixel electrode and a counter electrode; a second substrate disposed opposite to the first substrate; a liquid crystal layer containing a liquid crystal material between the first substrate and the second substrate; and an alignment film containing an azobenzene group-containing polymer having an azobenzene group between the first substrate and the liquid crystal layer, wherein the alignment film is disposed out of contact with the pixel electrodes.
