abstract An antimicrobial cap and method for inhibiting the growth of microbes and disinfecting a port are disclosed. The antimicrobial cap comprises an assembly that includes an outer cap, an inner member and a pad disposed within the inner member and impregnated with an antimicrobial agent in order to disinfect the port. The antimicrobial cap includes attachment features and a lock out mechanism allowing the disinfection of different types of ports and connectors and their safe disengagement and thereafter enabling the lock out mechanism in order to prevent re-use of the antimicrobial cap.
