titleOfInvention | Modulation of calcium ion homeostasis in harvested transplantable hearts |
abstract | An oxygenated cardioplegic composition for immediate reperfusion of a donor heart after its procurement. The composition comprises an adenosine-lidocaine mixture for causing immediate cessation of the heart's systolic function upon contact; a normokalemic concentration of potassium ions; a concentration of Ca 2+ ions selected to maintain the intracellular level of Ca 2+ ions in the harvested heart muscle cells at about 10 −4 mmol/L; and a pH of 6.9. The oxygenated cardioplegic composition is pre-warmed to about 35° C. and then used for immediate reperfusion of a donor heart for at least three minutes after its procurement. |
