abstract | The present invention relates to methods of diagnosing sepsis or sepsis risk in a subject and methods of treating a patient for sepsis. The methods include detecting the presence of a subpopulation of neutrophils having an elevated integrin VLA-3 (CD49c/CD29) expression level in the subject. The method also includes contacting a biological sample from a subject with a reagent that binds specifically to integrin VLA-3 (CD49c/CD29) in the biological sample, detecting the reagent bound to integrin VLA-3, and determining the expression level of integrin VLA-3 in the sample. The invention further relates to a method of discriminating between sepsis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and a method of treating a patient for SIRS which includes detecting the presence or absence of a subpopulation of neutrophils having an elevated integrin VLA-3 expression level in a subject having systemic inflammation. |
