abstract The present invention relates to a method for producing zwitterionic monomers having variable charge distances m between an anionic group and a cationic group, wherein the dihalogen compounds are reacted with N,N-alkylated amino alcohols to form zwitterionic, monohalogenated monoalcohols, which are then sulfonated by adding metal sulfite salts. The final step of the synthesis is an acid-catalyzed esterification of said zwitterionic monoalcohols with methacrylic acid or acrylic acid to form the zwitterionic monomer.
