abstract A process for adjusting the wettability property of a plurality of on-demand activation-type microcapsules of a core and shell structure including the steps of: (a) providing a plurality of microcapsules of a core and shell structure, wherein the shell includes a polymeric matrix containing a certain amount of unreacted functionalizable reactive electrophiles covalently bonded to the surface of the wall of the shell of the microcapsules; and (b) contacting the plurality of microcapsules of step (a) with a certain amount of nucleophiles; wherein the nucleophiles are adapted to react with the electrophiles; and wherein the nucleophiles are adapted to modify the wettability property of the microcapsules' shell structure to a predetermined degree of hydrophilicity or solvent compatibility.
