abstract A composite flame barrier includes at least two layers of nonwoven flame resistant fibers, and at least one active chemical layer including a heat absorbing intumescent or endothermic compound, the active chemical layer being mechanically bound to and at least partially embedded within the nonwoven fiber layers. The composite flame barrier is particularly useful in applications that require a flexible, extended time fire barrier. Such applications include, for example, fuel line, process pipeline and valve protection when transporting combustible liquids; structural steel fireproofing, electrical cable wrap and fire-rated wall assemblies, especially those requiring two, three and four hour fire-ratings, when tested according to ASTM E-119 or similar testing methods and standards.
