abstract Described herein are tissue adhesive substrates and methods of making such substrates. Tissue adhesive substrates comprise a glass substrate and a silane covalently bound to the glass substrate. In some variations, the silane may be an amino silane, and may comprise an aryl or an alkyl moiety. In other variations, the silane may be coated with carbon. Silanes may be deposited onto the glass substrate by vapor deposition. Tissue adhesive substrates comprising carbon-coated silanized glass substrates may be capable of retaining a tissue section through multiple cycles of antibody staining and stripping without discernible or substantial damage to the tissue section. In addition, carbon-coated tissue adhesive substrates may also provide a fiduciary marker for closed-loop autofocussing mechanisms.
