abstract An electrophoretic display apparatus has an electrophoretic layer interposed between a first electrode and a second electrode each provided on the inner surface side of each of a pair of substrates and a boundary layer interposed between the first electrode and the electrophoretic layer. When the boundary layer has a thickness of T 1 and a volume resistivity of ρ 1 and the electrophoretic layer has a thickness of T 0 and a volume resistivity of ρ 0 , the thickness and the volume resistivity of the boundary layer satisfy the formula (ρ 1 /T 1 )≧1×10 13 Ω, and the thickness and the volume resistivity of the boundary layer and the electrophoretic layer satisfy the formula (ρ 1 ·T 1 )/(ρ 0 ·T 0 )≦1/9.
