abstract An electrode pair provided upstream of a transfer section in a conveyance direction nips a recording medium and applies an AC bias. A characteristic detection section detects a characteristic of a recording medium when the AC bias is applied. A control section refers to a corresponding relation of a storage section based on a characteristic value detected by the characteristic detection section, and compensates a transfer bias value applied to the transfer section.
