abstract A method of obtaining a spatially resolved measurement for the detection of melanin in fluorophore mixtures of a solid sample includes emitting at least one pulse of light from a laser light source onto the solid sample at an excitation wavelength between 300 nm and 1000 nm so as to provide fluorescence excitation of the melanin by photon absorption. The pulse of light has a photon flux density between 10 26 to 10 28 photons per cm 2 per second and a pulse length between 0.5 ns and 5 ns. An emitted spectral fluorescence response of the melanin is provided by evaluating a number of photons emitted at fluorescence wavelengths between 400 nm and 700 nm as to identify the melanin.
