The plurality of carbon nanotubes form a free standing carbon nanotube film structure. A method for fabricating the carbon nanotube-based composite material includes: providing a polymer matrix comprising a surface; providing at least one carbon nanotube film comprising a plurality of carbon nanotubes; disposing the at least one carbon nanotube film on the surface of the polymer matrix to obtain a preform; and heating the preform to combine the at least one carbon nanotube film with the polymer matrix.
