abstract A discharge-port surface of a recording head having a plurality of discharge-port rows from which ink is discharged is wiped with processing liquid applied between the discharge-port surface and the wiper. The amount of processing liquid applied to the discharge-port surface or the wiper differs for each discharge-port row. Alternatively, at least two kinds of processing liquid are applied for the discharge-port rows. Alternatively, the processing liquid to be applied is selected from a plurality of kinds of processing liquid depending on the ambient temperature.
