titleOfInvention Methods and compositions for obtaining amplifiable nucleic acids from tissues, cells, or viruses exposed to transport media
abstract An additive that substantially compensates for the adverse affects of transport media on the extraction and amplification of nucleic acids from tissue samples and a method for using the additive. The additive is combined with the transport media, either before, during or after the tissue sample is combined with the transport media. The additive provides a source for a negatively charged ionic species. The additive contains, for example, hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide, sodium percarbonate, urea-hydrogen peroxide, a metal salt a combination of peroxide and metal salt, or other sources for negatively charged ionic species. The additive is combined with the sample in an environment such that the negatively charged ionic species are present.
