titleOfInvention Monitoring of the state of the central nervous system of a subject
abstract The invention relates to a method and apparatus for monitoring the state of the central nervous system of a subject. In order to improve the performance of patient monitoring methods employing EMG measurement an electrode configuration with a multi-dimensional electrode unit, constructed to record motor unit action potentials from an underlying facial muscle, is positioned onto a facial area of a subject. The firing rate of the facial muscle is determined based on the motor unit action potentials acquired through the multi-dimensional electrode and the firing rate is utilized, as such or in combination with another parameter, as an indication of the state of the central nervous system of the subject.
