abstract Disclosed herein is a spherical optical structure having a particle diameter less than or equal to 500 μm, comprising a core substance and a coating substance coating the core substance, wherein the particle diameter and/or the thickness of the coating substance of the spherical optical structure are controlled to be in a predetermined range, according to the refractive index of an external medium in contact with the outer surface of the spherical optical structure and the refractive index of the coating substance, so as to display a structural color in the visible light range. Also disclosed herein is a cosmetic coloring material comprising the spherical optical structure and a cosmetic composition comprising the coloring material.
