abstract The present invention stems from the realization that the cell surface content of sialic acids is associated with drug susceptibility and resistance in neoplastic and damaged cells. A general decrease in the amounts of the α 2 - 6 linked sialic acid has been confirmed in resistant phenotype compare to its corresponding sensitive parental cells. Treating the resistant phenotype with neuraminidase, an enzyme that removes the sialic acid from the sugar chain, facilitates the drug internalization and reinstalls the cell susceptibility to the drug. Based on these observations, methods for predicting the resistance to a number of drugs and detecting multi-drug resistanc in neoplastic and damaged cells have been invented.
