The invention features a transgenic non-human mammal expressing or capable of expressing a GSK-3 transgene comprising a GSK-3 coding sequence, wherein expression of said coding sequence in the mammal is driven by an operably linked regulatory sequence that directs inducible expression in muscle. Following the induction of transgene expression, the transgenic non-human mammal exhibits hyperinsulinemia, increased weight gain on a high fat diet, and/or decreased muscle glycogen content on a high fat, as compared to a control animal not expressing the GSK-3 transgene. The invention also features methods of identifying in vivo modulators of GSK-3 activity. |
