abstract An electrooptical component comprising a side-chain polymer having nonlinear optical properties is disclosed. The polymer having photoaddressable properties contains a) at least one azobenzene-based dye, b) at least one mesogenic grouping, c) optionally at least one additional monomer unit and d) optionally a solubility-improving monomer unit, with the proviso that b) is optional in the embodiments where the azobenzene-based dye is mesogenic. Examples of electrooptical components disclosed include modulators, electrostrictive actuators and piezoelectric sensor.
