titleOfInvention Dialysis needle
abstract An apparatus and method is provided for reducing the number of needle penetrations experienced by a dialysis patient comprising a hollow needle having penetrating tip and a fluid inlet formed in the side wall for withdrawal of blood from the patient for transport through the lumen to a dialysis machine. A tubular member is positioned inside the hollow needle and has a longitudinal lumen formed therein, terminating in a distal port, for delivery of blood to the patient received from a dialysis machine. The longitudinal lumen is isolated from the lumen of the hollow needle to prevent mixing of the withdrawn blood and the delivered blood in the apparatus. A housing retains the hollow needle and has a first chamber in fluid communication with the lumen of the hollow needle and a second chamber in fluid communication with the longitudinal lumen of the tubular member. In an alternate embodiment a separator is provided to divide the lumen of the needle into separate chambers.
