abstract The present invention describes an industrially applicable process for preparing the aminophenol compounds represented by the formula (1) in a simple and easy process with high yield and high purity. The invention provides a method for producing an aminophenol compound of the formula (1) EMBED ISISServer, (1) where R1 and R2 may be the same or different and represent a hydrogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted lower alkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic group, with the proviso that R1 and R2 are not simultaneously hydrogen; R1 and R2 together with the adjacent nitrogen atom can form a 5- or 6-membered heterocycle with or without other heteroatoms; the heterocycle may be substituted by 1-3 substituents selected from a hydroxyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted lower alkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aryloxy group and others, the hydroxyl group in the formula (1) being substituted at the 2 or 4 position of the amino group phenyl ring, according to which the cyclohexanedione compound of the formula (2) EMBED ISISServer is reacted with the amine compound of the formula (3) EMBED ISISServer, (3) where R1 and R2 are as defined above, in a neutral or basic medium.
