abstract The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of 4-aminodiphenylamine or its substituted derivatives, comprising the steps of reacting aniline or aniline derivative and a nitrobenzene derivative; and reacting the aniline and nitrobenzene in the restricted zone, at the appropriate time and at the appropriate temperature, in the presence of a mixture containing a strong base and a suitable interfacial catalyst and an oxidant, to give the intermediate 4-aminodiphenylamine. Alternatively, the mixture may include an inorganic salt or an organic metal salt having a cation that would be a suitable cation of a strong inorganic base, and an oxidant and an organic base, wherein the mixture does not contain the reaction product of betaine and a strong inorganic base. The aminodiphenylamine intermediate is reduced to give 4-aminodiphenylamine or its substituted derivatives.
