titleOfInvention | METHOD FOR PRODUCING DINITROTOLUENE |
abstract | This invention relates to a method for producing dinitrotoluene by reacting nitric acid with toluene. The method combines two objectives associated with the production of DNT, the reaction of toluene with nitric acid in the absence of sulfuric acid. The first goal is to minimize the explosion hazard associated with such a reaction. The second goal is to obtain DNT having a significantly reduced content of phenolic by-product. Achievement of these two objectives is critical for the successful commercialization of the method for producing DNT using nitric acid (as opposed to the method for producing using a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids) The above objectives are achieved under specific reaction conditions by using a molar ratio of nitric acid to toluene above 14: 1 and such a concentration of acid that provides an effective concentration of acid in the product. |
